Going through that door

March 3, 2017

What door are you afraid of going through when it comes to writing? Maybe you’re not afraid but maybe you’re not ready yet? What am I talking about?

Some of us in unpublished land love them and others don’t want anything to do with them. I love them but my trouble is I never seem to be ready for them when they come around. My MS (Manuscript) is never polished enough in the time I have before I submit. Or I’m ready to submit say the first chapter but in case I place in the comp, I need to have my MS completed. That’s a hard ask with a newborn in the house. So I wait another year.

I didn’t wait this year and I had my first chapter polished – so I entered two competitions and they all give feedback. So I don’t care if I don’t place, I’m still going to get feedback from people in the industry. This is why I’m a big fan of entering competitions. Getting feedback on your work from people who are actively reading whatever genre you are writing in is invaluable. My family and friends will always tell me I’m doing great and they like my story – that’s their job. Sure they might say a couple of things like:

“Oh, I didn’t love that bit but everything else was great.”

“I don’t read romance but I loved yours!”

These aren’t the people who are going to give it to you straight. The ones who can do that are reading and writing in the industry now. They are the ones who can say if what I’m writing is up to scratch, if my story has an audience. The more feedback I can get the better my writing will be. Entering a competition also forces me to get my writing ready for a deadline which is great practice for getting novels completed by a deadline. It’s also an inexpensive way to get feedback and the biggest pay off is:

Some contests have awesome prizes  like a publishing contract! So it pays to enter and keep honing your craft.

I could touch on self-publishing so a writer doesn’t need to enter competitions but that’s for another day.

I’ll keep you posted on how I go with the competitions I’ve entered.

Do you like comps? Why or why not? Would love to hear from you.
